Deadstring Brothers

Ok, let me break it down for you folks; there is influence, then there is emulation, and then there is outright no concern to not sound like your idols. So, if you are anxious to hear a Rolling Stones LP that you have never heard, then here you go. I can’t tell you if lead singer Kurt Marschke prances around like Mick Jagger (god forbid), but on every other count vocally he gets way too close for our comfort.
“Smile” sounds like an out-take from the Exile era, while “Houston” sounds like an earlier exploratory version of “Soul Survivor” also from Exile on Main St. When it comes to Rolling Stones influences, this reviewer does not see this is as problematical, but when you get to the point of slavishness – say, Jagger might have the right to issue suit to get his voice back from Marschke - then it begs the question of why? I actually liked their earlier CDs and I was looking forward to this one, but this imitation is past flattery into just mimicking. Love the band, love the Rolling Stones, but you have to try harder to bring your own sound to the party. By the way, I hear Bill Wyman is available.
