Chuck Prophet
Let Freedom Ring!
(Yep Rock)
Chuck Prophet’s Let Freedom Ring! is all I need or want in a great rock ‘n’roll record. This guy is cool, writes and sings great songs and with his band, just hits all the sweet spots. You know – rock for real, cool parts and taste, restraint and then be able to rip your face off.
Opening with "Sonny Liston’s Blues," it is apparent that on top of everything good, you have found a lyricist that has an unique world view. On “Where the Hell is Henry,” “American Man” and the title track, the band rocks with such a straight and unfussy naturalness.
You hear this and you wonder why is this so difficult for so many others. But the band is really that good. And on tunes like “You & Me Baby (Holding On)” and “Barely Exist,” the words reveal a writer who has a pretty well-attuned sensitivity to the human condition. And we’re going to work with “Hot Talk,” a much overdue Greg Kihn homage. Hey, on top of everything else, Mr. Prophet has a sense of humor. And if you are counting cards, there is not one less-than-great track on this record.
Prophet has come a long way since the Green On Red paisley underground days and you would be doing yourself a favour to check out Let Freedom Ring!
