Thomas’ Apartment
Tuesday Night Lights
(Self-Released)
Love, ecstasy, torment, discovery and loss. All cliché. It takes a certain kind of rock band to write an album dealing with this subject that’s been long worn out by all of its predecessors. Thomas’ Apartment is that type of band. Tuesday Night Lights is no sappy late-night infomercial collection of “love songs.” The narrative formed by these 12 tracks is a masochistic on-again-off-again tailspin.
It is the lyrics of Tuesday Night Lights that really stand out. It’s the sort of album one would expect to come from the early '90s: the era of the Gin Blossoms, Tonic, Semisonic, etc. However, Thomas’ Apartment takes the leap from “[Hey] Jealousy” to “Just For Tonight.” Idealism is replaced by passionate reality. The album begins with break up (“Miles Away”), but soon falls back into old habits (“Just For Tonight”).
The experience of Tuesday Night Lights is not a purely emotional one. The raw experience of these songs is brought to life by every member of the band. The interplay of guitar and bass (much like early Smashing Pumpkins) rise and fall, and drums provide a steady heartbeat, interrupted by occasional murmurs and irregularities. All the members of Thomas’ Apartment play together as a well-oiled heartbreak machine.
